![]() It was ridiculous but it kinda worked - somewhat.Īll in all, it was a good effort for The Asylum - actually one of the best that I’ve seen from the studio so far. One thing’s for sure, I will never look at Honest Abe in the same way again. I also appreciated the story being linked to the Civil War (which I know very little of) and featuring other key characters in American history such as General Stonewall Jackson, Theodore Roosevelt and John Wilkes Booth in the movie. Oberst’s theater background worked for him (he also played other American presidents and even Jesus Christ on the stage) as he was able to incorporate Honest Abe’s mannerisms in his portrayal of his zombie hating version. There is no obvious sense of urgency because how can one really take a group of dudes wearing ribbons on their necks seriously as saviors or action heroes?Īnyways, considering all its setbacks, I could not say that the movie was lacking in appeal. Compared to other zombie movies, this is shot mostly in the day so without the cover of darkness, it is obvious that the team is scrimping on extras as only a few zombies loiter around the area near the fort. In the film, a young Abraham Lincoln learns to hunt vampires to avenge his mothers death before deciding to climb the political ladder. There are great moments of cinematography, mostly the tight shots on Abe after he beheads a zombie or two. The quality of the film is also quite good. Its the sort of mindless horror that makes no sense with an overacting cast whose fake beards and mustaches are so obvious that it’s laughable. While interviewing the survivor, the President immediately recognizes the affliction as the same one his mother suffered from and, armed with his retractable scythe, asks that a group of 12 agents accompany him to the Fort to contain the possible outbreak of zombies.įor a low budget movie with a farfetched premise, I must say that I enjoyed this movie very much. Fast forward to many decades later when Abe is finally president, he receives a report that a Union solider has returned after his entire army of 30 men was killed by an unknown affliction while trying to seize a Confederate stronghold, Fort Pulaski. Apparently, Abe’s mom turns into a zombie and his dad couldn’t deal with it so he asks his son to end his wife with a scythe that the family keeps handy in case of zombie infestation. The movie starts off with a brief background of Abe as a young boy who is forced to kill his own mother because his father commits suicide. Zombies is centered around the time prior to his assasination by John Wilkes Booth, and get this! His zombie-killing ways is connected to it. If you haven’t heard about him, its because Oberst is better known for his theatrical portrayals than his long list of low budget movie starrers.Īnyway, while Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter features the American president as a young man, Lincoln vs. Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies! Not to be mistaken for the recent big budget Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter movie released in cinemas, this “mockbuster,” (what they call straight to DVD knockoffs or spinoffs of blockbuster movies), was produced by The Asylum Productions and stars Bill Oberst Jr.

In her absence and in the midst of post-success family quarrels, Bradley sounds heartbreakingly alone when he wails “I’ve lost the best friend I’ve ever had.” “ Changes,” and its accompanying video, show the singer at his most emotionally unhinged and dramatically vulnerable.Ī few years ago, Bradley’s success seemed more romantic in its improbability. ![]() After spending a lifetime estranged, Bradley patched up his relationship with his mother in time to serve as her caretaker before she passed, and also early enough that she got to see his career finally take off. Of the spare forty-minute tracklist, “Things We Do For Love” might be the most satisfyingly retro offering, complete with a dose of doo-wop accompaniment and a nimble, romantic groove. The album’s greatest accomplishment is in its most unexpectedly personal moment though, in which Bradley wrestles an out-of-character Black Sabbath ballad about a breakup into an agonizing paean to his late mother. Much of the album is about love: searching for it, being wronged by it, basking in it. Near the end of “Nobody But You” a horn line quotes the unmistakable saxophone from Seals and Crofts 1972 hit “Summer Breeze,” whereas the opening piano-laced drum break on “You Think I Don’t Know (But I Know)” conjures up Freddie Scott’s “(You) Got What I Need,” now perhaps better known to all as the sample chop Biz Markie finagled into “Just a Friend.” But the album is nonetheless inflected with the referential post-funk and hip-hop drum sounds of label guitarist Thomas Brenneck and company. Musically, Changes fits squarely into the Daptone house sound, but the session players-primarily from Menahan Street Band but also Bradley’s touring group The Extraordinaries-are more restrained here to make room for Bradley's big presence and even bigger voice. Like other songs on the album, the song is vaguely and upliftingly political: On “Changed For the World” Bradley tells us "Heaven is crying, the world is shaking." Half singing, half preaching, he warns “God is unhappy, the moon is breaking / Blood is spilling, God is coming.” ![]() The record opens with a soulful gospel rendition of “God Bless America” in which the singer delivers an organ-laced testimony the same keys pop up in funkier form on follow-up “Good to Be Back at Home.” After spending much of his seventh decade as a first-time international headliner, Bradley sings about the mixture of relief and disappointment in his return trip. For a guy who has often been affectionately pigeonholed-Bradley has earned a tagline as the “The Screaming Eagle of Soul”-the new album instead finds him at his most versatile and complete. ![]() Changes’ lyrics are immediately and sometimes overly familiar, but Bradley’s unmistakable voice is the obvious draw throughout. ![]()

I don’t know if link posting is verboten, so i don’t want to break any rules by posting one If you google it, it should be fairly easy to find a download. The Kindle for PC version that I’m using now, which is working, is “KindleForPC-installer-0”. But if I had to choose one, I’d pick the one where I could put all my ebooks. I admit though, I’ll often leave the kindle copy on the kindle app, and read with it as well- it really is a nice app. Now, I just convert any kindle copies I buy into epub, bc I like having my library all in one place. The UB Reader Pro app allowed me to create and organize my library with bookshelves, but when I bought a kindle or an audiobook, they didn’t fit in that library, so I had to create a text document, tabled, with every title organized into those paradigms. My ebook and physical libraries are organized on an OCD like level by genre, by region, then chronologically, and in the case of monarchies, by person and epoch (Most of my books are history related). When I started buying them, the bulk were epub format, and so I used an epub app (UB Reader Pro). The caveat being, I have about 4,000 ebooks on each device, stored on expandable memory. The kindle for android app is free, and actually a very lovely app, feature wise, to read with. I don’t have a kindle- I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab E (10”), and a Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 (10′), that I use for ereading. My advice is to find a copy of the older version, and back it up, so you’ll have it in the future for re-installing, if need be. ![]() I’m currently using an older version, and it works fine with Calibre. But even if Amazon stops, those who own older Kindle hardware devices will still be able to obtain AZW-format ebooks via the expedient of downloading them to the Kindle then copying them across via USB. It’s unclear how long Amazon will support these older versions, or that they’ll be available for download. Once you have, go to the Tools menu, then Options, then General and uncheck the box to install updates automatically-and then just don’t update. The only way to resume being able to convert downloaded Kindle content is to uninstall Kindle for PC, then reinstall Kindle for PC version 1.17, currently accessible via this link (or this one for the OS X version). Instead, it uses the new KFX ebook format-which nothing else can read or convert right now. It turns out that the new version of Kindle for PC, 1.19, no longer uses the AZW ebook format that Calibre knows how to read. Even though it’s DRM-free, when I dragged and dropped the file from my “My Kindle Content” directory across to Calibre, it couldn’t figure out what to do with the file.Ī little detective work turned up this Mobileread forum thread. I noticed it myself when I was trying to add a DRM-free title I just bought, Bone Dance by Emma Bull, to my Calibre library. Things just got a little harder for folks who like to store their Amazon purchases in Calibre. So, there may no longer be any need to use these workarounds. The high tide was relatively late in the day, which meant we couldn't leave Holwerd until ~3pm on Saturday. The weekend we chose - August 4/5 - was a bit tricky in terms of planning. We decided to lower the bar for our first trip, and move one island to the east, to Ameland! The town of Nes in Ameland is a ~10km crossing from Holwerd, which can take 1.5 to 3 hours depending on how much current you have in your favor. The initial idea was to paddle to Terschelling, but Iede informed us that it's a 6-hour non-stop crossing. So as we were sitting in the sun on the banks of the IJssel River, we discussed the possibilities of an overnight trip on the Wadden Sea. Only North America, Central America, South America, the Philippines, Japan and Korea use "red, right, returning." The rest of the world is the opposite. By the way, did you know that the expression "red right returning" that we use in the US does not apply in Europe? In Europe the red and green buoys are on opposite sides, as compared to in the US. For this reason, it's important to stay out of the navigation channel, which is marked by red and green buoys. For the crossing to Ameland, a ferry departs Holwerd and Nes every hour, which means a large ship passes by every 30 minutes while you're crossing (plus the occasional speeding water taxi). Luckily, the large barrier islands provide a bit of sheltering from the larger waves on the North Sea. Wind and waves are also a factor, as the wind can change quickly. ![]() Some access points become wide, squishy mudflats at low tide, making landing/launching with gear-laden boats a very messy endeavor. ![]() Another thing to consider is whether the put-in and take-out points are accessible at certain water levels. It's essential to time your trip based on the currents the current speeds in the channels can easily exceed those of your fastest paddle stroke, and it's easy to fall dry on a mudflat during falling tide. Each rising tide pushes water from the North Sea between the islands, into the tidal channels, and over the flats. ![]() Stormlions should be slain as they drop Stormlion Mandibles, which are necessary for the boss's summoning item. While they are easy to kill by hiding as their bolts cannot penetrate blocks, be wary as they can fall from above and trap the player in confined areas.
